Tesla has discontinued the Solar Roof. Installers were told the glass solar tiles are no longer available to order, and the company will supply conventional solar panels going forward. The reason, according to reporting, is that Tesla concluded the product was not financially viable.
I have been saying some version of this for close to a decade. Not because I dislike the idea of a roof that makes power. Because the business model behind building integrated solar has never held up, and homeowners are the ones left holding the bag when it collapses.
What Actually Happened
Electrek broke the story, citing two sources close to the program who confirmed that Tesla notified its certified third party installer network that solar roof tiles can no longer be ordered. One source said Tesla internally determined the product was not financially viable.
The website tells the same story. The long standing Solar Roof page now redirects to the solar panels page, and Solar Roof has been removed from the Energy navigation menu entirely. That menu now lists only Solar Panels, Powerwall, and Megapack.
This did not happen overnight. Tesla stopped breaking out Solar Roof deployment numbers in its quarterly reports back in early 2024, and the product had quietly disappeared from its marketing well before this week. Coverage of the shutdown notes that Tesla is now pushing its own 420 watt conventional panels made in New York instead.
The product was unveiled in October 2016 on a Hollywood back lot using homes from the set of Desperate Housewives, weeks before shareholders voted to approve Tesla’s roughly $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity. The Solar Roof demo was a central part of selling that deal. Ten years later the product is gone and the panels won.
The Local Story Is Worse Than the National One
Here in Southwest Florida, the Solar Roof story does not end with a press cycle. It ends with a phone that nobody answers.
Kelly Roofing in Naples was the marquee Tesla Solar Roof installer in this market. They were one of the first certified installers in Florida and promoted the product heavily across Collier, Lee, and Charlotte Counties. In August, WINK News reported that the company announced it was insolvent and winding down operations after its lender froze its accounts, leaving customers out of deposits and refund checks that bounced.
So think about where that leaves a homeowner with a Tesla Solar Roof in Naples right now. The manufacturer has discontinued the product. The installer is gone. And to my knowledge there is no remaining certified Solar Roof service option in this market.
Why We Cannot Just Pick Up the Work
People assume that a licensed solar contractor can service any solar system. That is not how this product works.
We got a service call at the end of July from a homeowner in Naples with Tesla equipment installed by Kelly Roofing. Panels needed to come off and go back on after a new metal roof. We had to decline. The system used proprietary mounting components we cannot buy and do not have the tooling for, and the certification requirements attach to the specific hardware. Passing on work is not something I enjoy doing, but I am not going to touch a system where I cannot source the parts or stand behind the attachment.
That was a conventional panel system. Solar roof tiles are considerably worse. The tile is the roof and the roof is the electrical system, which means every service event is simultaneously a roofing job and an electrical job on discontinued proprietary parts. There is no aftermarket. There is no equivalent replacement tile at the supply house. There is no local roofer who can flash around it and call it a day.
The Warranty Is Not the Same Thing as Service
Existing owners are being told that warranty coverage, app monitoring, and Powerwall integration continue as normal. I hope that holds. But a warranty is a promise to make you whole under defined conditions, not a promise that a qualified crew will be at your house next Tuesday.
The questions that actually matter are how long Tesla maintains replacement tile inventory for damaged sections, who is authorized to install those tiles when a tree limb takes out a section during a summer storm, and whether any roofing company in Southwest Florida is willing to take on the liability of working around a system it did not install. Those are open questions right now, and I have watched this pattern enough times to know how it usually resolves. Now Think About the Day the Roof Has to Come Off
This is the question almost nobody asks before they buy, and it is the one that should decide the whole thing.
Every roof in Florida gets replaced eventually. Sometimes it is age. Sometimes it is a storm. Sometimes it is an insurance carrier that decides your roof has aged out whether you agree or not. When that day comes on a normal house, a crew shows up, tears the covering off into a dumpster, dries in the deck, and installs the new roof. It is loud, it is dusty, and it is routine.
That is not what happens on a solar roof. Those tiles are not roofing material with a solar bonus. They are wired photovoltaic devices connected in series, which means the array carries hazardous DC voltage any time the sun is up. You cannot hand that to a demolition crew with pry bars. The system has to be properly de-energized and decommissioned, the tiles have to be removed deliberately rather than torn off, the wiring and penetrations have to be dealt with, and everything that comes off is electronic waste rather than roofing debris.
So a reroof on a solar roof is not one contract. It is a coordinated project involving a qualified electrical or solar contractor to take the system down, a roofer to install the new roof, and, if you want to stay solar, somebody to design and permit a replacement system. The scheduling alone is a headache, because the house has to stay dried in between trades.
Here is the part that should worry a prospective buyer. Most roofers are going to look at that job, decide it is not their circus, and tell you to find somebody else to get the old roof off before they will quote a normal roof. And with the product discontinued, the tiles you remove have no salvage value and no replacement path. You are not reroofing. You are demolishing a discontinued electrical system and starting over.
Yes, that may be twenty years away for a newer install. But it is not twenty years away for the person buying that house next spring. If you are considering a home with an existing solar roof, price out that eventual removal before you write the offer, and understand that the number is going to be considerably larger than a conventional tear off. A roof that generates power is worth something. A roof that nobody in your county will touch is a liability disclosed at closing.
Building Integrated Solar Is Not Ready, and Maybe Never Will Be
Here is the part I want people to actually take away, because it is bigger than Tesla.
The appeal of building integrated photovoltaics is aesthetic. You get power without the look of panels. That is a real preference and I do not dismiss it. But every version of the concept fails the same three tests in Florida.
First, serviceability. Combining the weather barrier and the power plant into one component means any failure in either system becomes a failure in both. Rack mounted panels can be pulled, replaced, or removed for a reroof by any competent crew. Integrated products cannot. It’s the TV/VCR combo of roofs.
Second, supply. A niche product from one manufacturer with a small dealer network is a single point of failure. When the manufacturer exits, the parts stop existing. Standard panels and standard racking are commodities with dozens of interchangeable options.
Third, cost per watt. Integrated products have never come close to competing with conventional modules on price, and conventional modules keep getting cheaper. Tesla’s own conclusion about financial viability is the market saying this out loud.
This is the same reasoning behind why we do not install panel skirts and why I have written that solar fences are a bad fit for this region. Appearance driven solar decisions tend to cost real performance, real serviceability, or both.
Could building integrated solar work someday? Maybe, if it is built on standardized, commodity components that multiple manufacturers supply and any qualified contractor can service. That is not how it has been attempted so far, and it is not how Tesla attempted it.
If You Own a Tesla Solar Roof in Southwest Florida
Do not panic, and do not assume it is worthless. It still makes power. But get organized now instead of after the next storm.
Locate your install documents, warranty paperwork, permits, and the electrical drawings. Confirm your Tesla account access and that the system is reporting correctly in the app. Open a service ticket directly with Tesla for anything that is currently not working, and get the response in writing. If you are selling, expect buyers and home inspectors to ask harder questions than they would about a rack mounted array, and be prepared to document what happens if a tile fails.
If you are planning a reroof or an addition and you have panels rather than tiles, that is a much more workable situation. Relocating conventional panels is routine work, which I covered in moving solar panels to another house.
The Bottom Line
Tesla discontinuing the Solar Roof is not a shock. It is the predictable end of a product that was always more marketing than market. The lesson for Southwest Florida homeowners is not that solar is risky. It is that proprietary, single source, aesthetically driven building products are risky, and roofs are the worst possible place to take that risk in a hurricane zone.
And if you are shopping for a home in Southwest Florida that already has one, do not treat the solar roof as a bonus feature. Treat it as a system with a removal cost attached, and find out what that cost is before you agree to a price.
Buy solar that any competent contractor can service in ten years with parts available from more than one supplier. That is not the exciting answer. It is the one that still works after the manufacturer moves on.
